Meet Janet Garkanyalawuy and her gathu (niece) Reybeanne Guriningu. This is a snapshot of a beautiful moment that represents the passing on of traditional knowledge and practices to the next generation. Yolŋu are so proud when they come in with a young person who has spent some time sitting and learning with them. Janet is proud to have been able to help Reybeanne navigate the process of making art and selling it at the ‘Art & Craft’, as Yolŋu call the Art Centre. At the ‘Art & Craft’, we love being part of these stories and feel so much pride as well! 🙌🏾

This is Mungurru, one of the many names for the Yirritja monuk gapu (salt water) in Blue Mud Bay. Paul Maymuru paints a different miny’tji (design, pattern) for both the salt and fresh water that are part of the Manggalili clan songlines.

These days Gapuwiyak is full of freshwater as we deal with full rivers and muddy roads after the cyclone. Hope everyone is staying safe out there! 🙏🏾

“I have been taught how to work with pandanus fibre by two of my grandmothers and my mother. They are well known fibre artists. I live in Mapuru, we have many visitors coming there and I am one of the teachers. I love working with pandanus with my families.” – Julieanne Gitjpulu Malibirr

Today we feature a selection of Julieanne’s bulpu (dilly bags), made with gunga (pandanus), ḏarwirr (lawyer vine) and baḻgurr raki (hand-spun string from the Kurrajong tree). The intricate construction mainly uses twining techniques, where open twined style looks airy and light, and the closed weave is tightly interwoven in neat rows. The juxtaposition in the texture and colouring of these bulpu speaks to the creativity and range in Julieanne’s craftsmanship.

While traditional Yolŋu uses of the bulpu were predominantly for collecting and carrying, they have more significance today beyond aesthetic objects in their conceptualisation in Waŋarr’ (Ancestral) stories as carrying the law and ‘stuff’ to create life.

All these unique works are available on our website, link below! Domestic shipping is included in the price and DM us if you have any questions!

I had the honour of staying in Mapuru in 2010 and would love to visit again, one day. I learned so much about our land, the locals, culture, and what an amazing town it is. At home in Melbourne I admire pieces made by Linda and Gitpulu 😊 And the wonky tray you taught me to weave. 😬
